Picture of the Day – 6/28/12

Supporters of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) cheered today as the Supreme Court voted to uphold the key provisions of the act.  The decision came in the late morning, and was decided by a 5-4 vote, with the conservatively-affiliated Chief Justice John Roberts affirming with the four liberally-leaning justices on the Court.  The four dissenters were from the conservative side of the bench.

They Court upheld that the health care mandate, requiring that most citizens need to obtain health care by 2014 or face a tax, was constitutional under the Taxation Clause of the Constitution, but not the Commerce Clause.  Both President Obama and Candidate Romney responded soon after the Court made their decision.  Those responses, and the full report, can be read in the Reuters articles here.
