Members of the UK Parliament have recently debated the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill. On 5th February 2013 a significant majority vote in the House of Commons moved the Bill to the Committee stage of its legislative journey. It is anticipated that the Bill will become law in a few months’ time.
Thomson Reuters applauds the latest passage of the Bill and encourages its completion through the legislative process. By voicing our endorsement of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, we continue to demonstrate our active support for equal opportunities for all our staff and all government legislation that promotes equality.
Many leading companies – many of whom are our global clients – take active positions in supporting marriage equality. We are pleased to join them. Supporting this legislation is consistent with our diversity and inclusion policies and agenda, and positions us well in the eyes of our people – current and prospective – as well as the LGBT community.
Our support of the Marriage Bill is the latest example of our commitment to marriage equality. In the U.S., our participation in the U.S. Business Coalition for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) Repeal put into action our company’s stance on diversity, equality and fairness. This recent partnership deepened our commitment in the U.S., which began with our public stance on the Minnesota Marriage Amendment in 2012.

President Aquino lauded Thomson Reuters in his speech and said: “This is a company that has instilled what the awarding body calls an ‘improvement culture’ in their organization. Truly, this is something any office—and any government—should aspire for and especially since we don’t have any government agency awardee this year. This is especially notable since this company works directly with foreign offices, and is living proof that the Filipino worker can compete on a global scale.” (more…)

Our CEO Jim Smith, together with a group of other committed CEOs, has signed a pledge calling on the end of the remaining global travel restrictions for HIV positive people. Some 45 countries still discriminate against people with HIV by imposing some restrictions on the entry, stay and residence of people living with HIV. This can include laws and regulations established by governments and policies used by individual employers.

Consumers were more optimistic in the most recent survey about prospects for their own personal finances, anticipated continued improvement in the national economy, and expected the unemployment rate to decline significantly during the year ahead. Overall, consumers were more confident about economic prospects in October than any other time during the past five years.
Nonetheless, these substantial gains still left many consumers in a difficult financial situation, as equal numbers reported continued financial declines as reported that their financial situation had improved, and as many consumers anticipated improved economic conditions as expected continued problems in the national economy.
