After a three week hiatus since the last Formula One™ grand prix in Bahrain, teams are eager to get back to the planning that every race week entails. While not always glamorous, the crucial four days of preparation leading up to a race weekend bring teams one step closer to, smelling burnt tires on the pavement, feeling the adrenaline of a well-executed corner, and with any luck… tasting victory – regardless of how each team defines it.
As the 2013 Formula One™ Spanish Grand Prix approaches on May 12th at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, fond memories are sure to be in the minds of the Williams F1 Team – of whom Thomson Reuters has been a proud partner the last 14 years. After a win by Pastor Maldonado at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix – marking a great accomplishment for the Williams F1 Team and Maldonado – and the progress over the last few races, all signs point to another exhilarating upcoming race weekend for the Team.
Today, more than a billion people around the world will celebrate Earth Day. We recognize the importance of not only becoming more aware of what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint, but of how we can engage the next generation in the conversation about ways we can reduce, reuse, recycle and renew Earth’s resources.
A new sub-site on the Thomson Reuters Sustainability site will do just that! Youth Perspectives will feature articles and observations from highly engaged young people across the globe. It’s a space for the next generation to lend their voices to the environmental sustainability dialogue, and a place for us all to learn from one another and get re-energized to come up with fresh ideas for ways we can make a difference.
“Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” said Stephane Bello, Chief Financial Officer, Thomson Reuters. “Sustainability from Thomson Reuters gives fresh voice to the current issues relating to this basic problem of preservation. It’s right that the next generation should have their voice through the site.”

Our Intellectual Property & Science business recently announced the launch of MetaMiner Asthma, the latest industry-academic-government, disease-focused collaboration dedicated to advancing the understanding of pathological pathways that cause asthma and the development of new patient profiling methods to improve the diagnosis and treatment for asthmatic patients.
MetaMiner Asthma will provide unique insight into the pathological mechanisms underlying asthma, including the different cell types involved in the disease. The result of this partnership will add to the currently available collection of respiratory maps by producing over 30 new pathway maps related to the signaling of immune cells involved in asthma pathology, such as T-cells, macrophages, eosinophils and neutrophils. These maps and the insights from computational analyses using the pathways will be exclusively available to participating members for the first year, in order to aid in asthma research and protect intellectual property interests.
The asthma pathway maps will be delivered via MetaCore, the world’s most comprehensive, knowledge-based platform for data mining and functional biology-related analysis. The content can be used for target discovery, candidate selection, biomarker discovery, translational medicine and personalized care applications.

Members of the UK Parliament have recently debated the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill. On 5th February 2013 a significant majority vote in the House of Commons moved the Bill to the Committee stage of its legislative journey. It is anticipated that the Bill will become law in a few months’ time.
Thomson Reuters applauds the latest passage of the Bill and encourages its completion through the legislative process. By voicing our endorsement of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill, we continue to demonstrate our active support for equal opportunities for all our staff and all government legislation that promotes equality.
Many leading companies – many of whom are our global clients – take active positions in supporting marriage equality. We are pleased to join them. Supporting this legislation is consistent with our diversity and inclusion policies and agenda, and positions us well in the eyes of our people – current and prospective – as well as the LGBT community.
Our support of the Marriage Bill is the latest example of our commitment to marriage equality. In the U.S., our participation in the U.S. Business Coalition for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) Repeal put into action our company’s stance on diversity, equality and fairness. This recent partnership deepened our commitment in the U.S., which began with our public stance on the Minnesota Marriage Amendment in 2012.
